An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure

The unexpected loss of a production analytics system could mean more than just lost revenues; unplanned downtime can lead to loss of data and business reputation, decreased customer satisfaction and retention, reduced employee morale, productivity issues, and legal entanglements.

In a worst-case scenario, what's the business impact of losing access to business-critical data on your Teradata system? To avoid such pain, you need a plan, and we can help. The first step is to estimate how long — weeks, days, hours – you could operate successfully without your essential data. Business function impact is the primary factor in determining recovery time objective (RTO) as well as which recovery option is right for you.

Business Continuity

It is important to understand the three Teradata Business Continuity components when gathering requirements: Data Protection, Recoverability, and Availability. Each has its own attributes and builds on the previous component to protect business-critical systems.

  • Data Protection guards against data loss and may use data replication (backup) with tape or over a network for a secondary, offsite copy of critical data
  • Recoverability addresses data restoration in the event of a catastrophic system loss and involves a second system brought up upon declaration of a disaster
  • Availability is active protection for planned and unplanned downtime via real-time data synchronization to a second system

Managed Disaster Recovery

Managed Disaster Recovery provides a cloud-based set of services to support your disaster recovery (DR) business needs. It offers two tiers of recoverability: Managed Cold-DR and Managed Warm-DR. Each has differing levels of recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO). This allows you to pick a simple, quick to implement, and cost-effective DR solution for your critical Teradata systems that best meets your needs and technical landscapes.

The way it works is simple: upon declaring a disaster, a previously architected Teradata Vantage™ system is made available in the pre-selected public cloud region. For Cold-DR (est. 72 hr* RTO) the environment is provisioned with the last archive restored, for Warm-DR (est. 24 hr* RTO) the environment is enabled for production use. After the initial configuration Teradata will provide testing support 2 times per year should a DR event ever occur.
